Employee wellbeing is often characterised as relating to all aspects of working life; from the quality and safety of the physical environment, to how workers feel about their work, the company culture and the leadership style. All of these things have an impact on how we feel about our workplace, our motivation to perform and our mental health.
And with 60% of employees citing heavy workload as the top cause of stress, followed by management style – and 60% of employers reporting an increase in common mental health conditions among employees (CIPD, health and wellbeing at work survey 2020) it is apparent that wellbeing should be a core part of our people agenda.
Of course, it is not that simple and external factors from our personal lives also play a huge part in our mental wellbeing, it’s not always work related. But with 60% of employees said they would feel more motivated and more likely to recommend their organisation as a good place to work if their employer took action to support mental wellbeing (Mind UK), it is our responsibility as employers to look after our people and create cultures of inclusivity and support.
