Pitch flinder to us in one sentence.
flinder is an international award-winning business disrupting the role of accountants servicing SMEs, particularly in the mission critical discipline of making rapid, well-informed business decisions using financial & operational real-time management intelligence.
How did you get your idea or concept for the business?
I came up with the vision of our business on holiday in the Caribbean in 2017. I was reading ‘Billions to Bust – and Back Again’ by Thor Bjorgolfsson while also complaining about the current way things were where I was working. Inspired, I came up with the blueprint for flinder and immediately spoke to Luke about it.
What was your journey like to get where you are?
For me it was over 16 years in the making – essentially the amount of time I spent at PwC which took me from Manchester to Amsterdam and back to London through Assurance, Business Recovery Services, Consulting and My Financepartner. All that experience has culminated on what we do and how we do it. We provide the same principles around finance function excellence as the best multinationals operate.
When it’s all over, how do you want to be remembered?
A great dad! And someone who transformed the accounting service quality and business partnering for SMEs.
Where do you see your industry going?
It’s about improvements in control, efficiency and insight – best of breed applications will continue for their specific purpose but become even richer and better integrated. Voice will likely be the first thing that comes in, after that we’re looking at improvements in OCR & transactional processing efficiency, and predictive analytics & predictive forecasting for SMEs. Some of it’s close while some of it’s far away! What won’t go away is the human strategic support.
What would you do in the event of a zombie apocalypse?
Ask my business partner, Luke, for advice – he’s a bit of a Walking Dead fan!
What made you choose your current location?
We’re actually squatting at the moment in Moorgate until London Bridge becomes more than just a building site. We’re excited to move into the brand-new Runway East when it opens there!
What is unique about your business?
We’re the only SME-focused accounting firm with a Data Engineering competence! Also, we religiously go skiing each year.
If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
Follow your dreams and believe in yourself – if you do, everything will fall into place.
Which company (other than your own) do you admire and why?
Red Bull – it’s such an awesome brand.
Who is/was your first client?
Ironically, our first client was PwC – the company both Luke and I left on 31 January 2017 was our first client on 1 February 2017!
If your company was a genre of music/artist what would it be?
Hmm…we like to be different, disruptive and make a name for ourselves. Not quite sure who that would be!
In my spare time I like to…
Ski, snowboard, cycle, fitness training, travelling, experience new cultures, read books from entrepreneurs & business leaders and dream of world domination. But above all that I love to spend time with my 10 year old daughter!
What is your favourite quote?
“When your backed against the wall, break the god damn thing down!” Harvey Specter. But more seriously it would be, “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” Napoleon Hill
