The app commerce company, Poq is a Software-as-a-Service platform that empowers retailers to create highly effective and fully customised native apps in record time.
How did you get your idea or concept for the business?
Oyvind [Poq’s CEO & fellow co-founder] had worked as a CTO for an ecommerce agency for 10 years and we realised that people are building apps the way Oyvind used to build websites in the nineties. Most ecommerce websites aren’t built on from scratch anymore, they’re built on a platform. That’s how we came up with the idea to build Poq as an ecommerce platform to easily build native mobile apps.
When it’s all over, how do you want to be remembered?
Poq made app commerce bigger than ecommerce!
Where do you see your industry going?
App commerce is rapidly growing, we’re constantly seeing records being broken from the volumes of downloads on the App and Play Stores to large pureplay retailers seeing the majority of their revenue being driven through their apps. Millennials have changed the way we shop, and Gen Z looks to be a driving force for app commerce too.
What would you do in the event of a zombie apocalypse?
Whatever happens, certainly go south. Why be cold in a zombie apocalypse?
What made you choose your current location?
Being in the tech hub of the country, our branding embodies the quirkiness of Shoreditch, the RWE community and a close proximity to Whitecross market. We really like having good lunch, so that was certainly helpful 😉
What is unique about your business?
What’s really unique about our company is the fact we offer Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), providing a platform for retailers to use and giving them back the control of their app. We’re an alternative to the traditional methods of app building that are typically based on agency or completely custom in-house approaches. Our clients benefit from the use of a template built with years of focus on retail apps, meaning they can go to market in just a few weeks and get the latest technology in our major quarterly releases.
If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
Don’t try to do everything at once. Certain fires are okay to burn. Focus on the lethal issues. Also, don’t do things that are great for investment, e.g. don’t prioritise ARR over cash.
Which company (other than your own) do you admire and why?
Quite a few. I love the user interface of our HR solution provider, CharlieHR; otherwise, I think Amplience is a company I admire how they’ve succeeded through tough times.
Who is/was your first client?
We mostly started out with small independent stores to begin with, but our first enterprise client, defining the business we have now, is House of Fraser.
If your company was a genre of music/artist what would it be?
The Poq founding team are big hip-hop fans. For a long time, you were not allowed to play anything else on the company speakers.
