Pitch Mustard Seed to us in one sentence.
We back the visionaries building a new tomorrow towards a sustainable global society.
How did you get your idea or concept for the business?
Alex and Henry (co-founders of Mustard Seed) had a long-standing wish to start something together.
While a lack of their own entrepreneurial ideas initially held them back, they began to think they should find people who had better ideas than what they could come up with. They realised that business models that were looking to solve a core global challenge always caught their eye and so Mustard Seed (an early-stage impact investor) was born.
What was your journey like to get where you are?
A crazy rollercoaster ride and we are truly thankful for it, as we continue to learn from all ups and downs and grow as a team and organisation.
When it’s all over, how do you want to be remembered?
As being kind!
Where do you see your industry going?
We are already experiencing a huge shift in the investment world from short-term, non-impactful capital, towards a more sustainable investment approach. One development for example, came from the desk of BlackRock chairman and CEO Larry Frink – “To prosper over time, every company must not only deliver financial performance, but also show how it makes a positive contribution to society.”
What we see at work and across our portfolio every day is if a company is doing something very important in the world, customers are going to want to buy more of it, employees are going to be more committed, and investors are going to want to be very involved in helping this company succeed. Long-term commercial and social returns are the way forward and we are excited to be part of this journey.
What would you do in the event of a zombie apocalypse?
Invest in a truly innovative, scalable and impactful business that reshapes scientific knowledge to account for zombies.
What made you choose your current location?
It is both a privilege and very inspiring to sit next to a bunch of startups changing the world, making our lives easier and better within a city bursting with creative talent.
What is unique about your business?
While the common view holds that seeking profit and pursuing social impact oppose each other, we exist precisely to help change this outdated paradigm. We believe this is what makes us special.
If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
Just do it!
Which company (other than your own) do you admire and why?
This is a tough question. To be honest all our portfolio companies are admirable simply because they have one thing in common: solving core global problems to help build a sustainable global society.
Who is/was your first client?
Friends who invested alongside us.
If your company was a genre of music/artist what would it be?
In my spare time I like to…
What is your favourite quote?
“To see things in the seed, that is genius.”
