Pitch Spin to us in one sentence.
Spin is an app that helps you find tennis partners and tennis courts in London. The app will match you with players based on your skill level, location and availability to ensure you have the perfect game!
How did you get your idea or concept for the business?
Tennis is a great sport but it’s no fun if you don’t have anyone to play with. Frustrated that I couldn’t find anyone, I tried joining a tennis club but unless you ‘knew’ people there I actually had the same problem – just an expensive one! I decided to create an app to make the whole process easier and that’s how Spin was born.
What was your journey like to get where you are?
Pretty crazy story really – I won £50k in a poker tournament, quit my job as a doctor, started a health-tech company with the winnings, raised VC and then sold that company, realised life was all about work/ life balance not just work and decided to get back into tennis where I got the idea for Spin!
When it’s all over, how do you want to be remembered?
Somebody that always had a good laugh!
Where do you see your industry going?
The tennis industry is pretty outdated when it comes to technology, but it is realising slowly that apps like Spin can help to increase participation and get more people playing tennis which is better for the industry as a whole in the long run.
What would you do in the event of a zombie apocalypse?
Get a machine gun and go out all guns blazing!
What made you choose your current location?
The main reason I choose Runway East was for the community – being a single founder I wanted to meet new people and after visiting 10 other co-working spaces, it was obvious that this was one of the best. I ended up meeting my CTO here so it turned out to be the right choice!
What is unique about your business?
Most apps in the tennis world are built by former professional tennis players and coaches who understand the tennis industry but don’t really understand the technology space. Spin is built by technology experts who happen to like tennis and this gives us a unique advantage in the development and marketing of the app.
If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
Which company (other than your own) do you admire and why?
Virgin and it’s boss Richard Branson – I love that he has created a brand so powerful that it can be applied across many different sectors.
Who is/was your first client?
Me! The first time I used my own app I was a little nervous…. After entering my details I was matched with another intermediate player who lived in Islington too. We agreed to play at Highbury Fields and after connecting on Tuesday we were playing by Friday!
If your company was a genre of music/artist what would it be?
In my spare time I like to…
Surprisingly enough I like to play tennis!
What is your favourite quote?
Just do it – Nike.
